Learner's permit FAQ

How do I get my learner's permit in Florida?

Complete the Drug & Alcohol course (TLSAE) if you're 18 or older, or the DETS course online if you're under 18. Then pass the Permit Exam (Class E Knowledge Exam). After you pass, pick up your learner's permit at your local Tax Collector office.

What's the difference between Drug & Alcohol (TLSAE) and DETS?

Both are the course Florida requires before the Permit Exam. Drivers 18 and older take the Drug & Alcohol course (TLSAE), and we offer it at our office for $40. Drivers under 18 take DETS, which is 100% online for $50.

Can I take Drug & Alcohol and the Permit Exam on the same day?

Yes. If you're 18 or older, book Drug & Alcohol + Permit Exam (1 Day) for $100 at our Miami Gardens or Margate office. That saves $10 compared to booking them separately.

I'm under 18. Can I book the Permit Exam before I finish DETS?

Yes. You can book your Permit Exam now and take DETS online in the meantime. Just finish DETS before your exam day. Your completion goes to the state automatically.

What should I bring to the Permit Exam?
  • Original, physical documents only. No photocopies or phone pictures.
  • Proof of identity: original U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport.
  • Immigration documents if you are not a U.S. citizen.
  • Your original Social Security card.
  • Two proofs of residency, like utility bills or bank statements.
  • Under 18: a parent or legal guardian must be present at check-in.
How old do I need to be to get a learner's permit?

You can get your Florida learner's permit starting at 15 years old.

What happens after I pass?

Your results are sent to the state the same day. Go to your local Tax Collector office to pick up your learner's permit. Then you can start driving lessons. See driving lessons
